The Gabrovo Energy Community – OPT is a local renewable energy initiative developed by the Municipality of Gabrovo in partnership with the municipal public transport company and open to citizens, businesses, and organizations. The community is based on a shared photovoltaic installation with a capacity of approximately 150 kWp, designed to produce clean electricity for local consumption and distribution among its members.
The project aims to increase the use of renewable energy at the local level, reduce dependence on volatile electricity markets, and ensure long-term price predictability for participants. A significant portion of the generated energy is consumed on-site, while the remaining energy is shared within the community or supplied to other members, creating a collaborative and efficient energy ecosystem.
The initiative is structured as a civil partnership, enabling voluntary participation and shared responsibility among members, including individuals, SMEs, NGOs, and local authorities. Participants can take different roles—such as investors, consumers, or producers—depending on their capacity and interest.
Beyond its economic benefits, the Gabrovo Energy Community also has a strong social dimension. Part of the generated energy is allocated at preferential conditions for social, educational, and cultural purposes, supporting local institutions and vulnerable groups.
By combining clean energy production, community engagement, and innovative governance, the project contributes to the broader goals of sustainable development, energy transition, and local resilience. It also serves as a replicable model for other municipalities seeking to establish energy communities and empower local stakeholders in the transition to a low-carbon future.
