Energy communities are very diverse regarding their organisational model, size, activities, legal form… This variety underscores the adaptability of energy communities, which can tailor their initiatives to suit the specific needs and resources of their members, and makes impossible the identification of a single best practice valid for all context.

This report categorises and characterises 21 good practices, providing detailed descriptions and analyses of their activities, purposes, and benefits. More specifically, the analysis focuses on their legal form, geographical scope, number of members, energy generation capacity, energy technologies, and level of maturity. These good practices provide an insight into the wide variety of energy communities that can be found in Europe.

While the document begins with methodological considerations relevant for scholars and policy makers, citizens looking for inspiration in other projects may find valuable information in the good practices portraits that start on page 38. The portraits include details about the foundation of the energy community, its driving forces, organisational structure, roles in decision-making, activities, key actors and stakeholders involved, key motivations of members, community support and acceptance, and more.
