Vesta MAIS is a techno-economic calculation model developed to understand the possible transition paths of heat supply in the built environment in the longer term.

Vesta MAIS is open source and open data. The model can be downloaded from GitHub.

How does the tool work?

The Vesta MAIS model makes it possible to carry out explorations regarding the heat transition of the built environment given various environmental factors such as policy, development of energy prices and other factors. Both building and area measures can be calculated.

The model is designed to explore a wide variety of techniques in terms of future potential and associated costs for society and end users. The model can perform calculations at both national and regional levels. This takes into account local conditions, including through the use of building-level spatial datasets.

One of the applications of the model is the ‘Launch analysis natural gas-free neighbourhoods’ in which the model was used to calculate the national costs for different natural gas-free strategies.
